The Curing Process: An Essential Step for New Concrete

When you have new concrete installed, whether it's a driveway, patio, or walkway, it goes through a crucial process known as curing. Curing is the period during which the concrete gains strength and durability. This process typically takes about 28 days, during which the concrete needs to be kept moist to prevent cracking and ensure proper hardening.

During the curing period, it's important to avoid placing heavy objects or vehicles on the concrete surface to allow it to set properly. Additionally, keeping the concrete moist by lightly misting it with water or covering it with a damp cloth can aid in the curing process. While it may be tempting to use the new surface immediately, patience during the curing period will pay off in the long run by ensuring a stronger and more durable concrete structure.

What to Expect After Installing New Concrete

After your new concrete has completed the curing process, you can expect it to showcase its full potential in terms of strength and durability. However, there are several essential steps to follow to maintain your concrete and keep it in top condition:

  • Regular Cleaning: To prevent the buildup of dirt, grime, and stains, make it a habit to regularly clean your concrete surfaces using a mild detergent and water. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the concrete. It can be helpful to pressure wash your concrete every 6 months to prevent build up and other residue on your concrete pad or service.

  • Sealing: Consider applying a concrete sealer to protect your surfaces from moisture penetration, stains, and UV damage. This simple step can significantly extend the lifespan of your concrete. The easiest way we have found to apply sealer is by purchasing a paint roller and cover, dip the paint roller in the concrete sealer and roll it over the concrete pad in segments. This is a very simple process and your sealer can be purchased at any concrete accessory retailer. We usually go over the concrete pad two times to seal the concrete.

    • Repair Cracks: Over time, concrete may develop small cracks due to exposure to various elements. Promptly repair these cracks using a concrete patching compound to prevent them from worsening.

    • Hairline Cracks - There are some ways to repair hairline cracks as they are only an aesthetic issue and do not affect the integrity of the concrete. However, when applying different methods to repair or conceal, you may find it difficult to color match the existing concrete with new concrete, caulk, epoxy, or grout.

      • Caulk - This is a simple, effective method that can be used to seal hairline cracks that aren't serious. Caulk is available at most hardware stores.

      • Epoxy injection - A professional can use an epoxy injection system to seal smaller hairline cracks and prevent further damage. The epoxy bonds with the surrounding concrete to prevent water from entering.

      • Grout - You can make your own grout using Portland cement and water to form a thick paste. Before adding the grout, moisten the old concrete along the crack with water for a few hours. However, grout is only a temporary fix because it doesn't flex with the concrete as it moves and shifts with temperature changes.

    • Structural Cracks

      • Unlike hairline cracks, structural cracks can threaten a home’s structural integrity. Some signs that may indicate that a crack is structural in nature may be that the crack is ⅛” or larger, a crack is horizontal in direction, the crack has shifted forward, one side of a crack projects out further than the other side of the crack, a wall is leaning, and there may be stair step cracks in the mortar on the exterior or interior walls of your home. Structural cracks will also form patterns that a professional can identify. Structural cracks typically signify a shift in the foundation. If you think you have a structural crack, you can contact us if you have any more questions or think it may need to be repaired.

  • Avoid Deicing Chemicals: During the winter months, refrain from using deicing chemicals on your concrete surfaces as they can cause damage. Opt for alternative methods such as sand or kitty litter to improve traction on icy surfaces.

  • Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect your concrete for any signs of damage, such as cracks, spalling, or discoloration. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent them from escalating and requiring costly repairs.

By following these simple maintenance tips, you can effectively care for your concrete surfaces and ensure they remain in excellent condition for years to come.
